Julene was employed as an ad designer and production artist for over 25
years with various magazines, newspapers, and commercial advertising.
She feels her graphic arts background gave her the ability to see graphic
shapes and what will make a painting “pop”, after all, in ad design the
purpose is for the ad to eye catching on the page so people will notice it.
Julene specializes in large format flowers, foliage, and animals for their
graphic shapes, dramatic color and lighting. Her paintings really are not
about flowers, or animals, but about composition, color, and light.
In her series of flower and foliage paintings the emphasis is capturing
light and shadow that is so fleeting. The color and nuances of flowers
have always intrigued and fascinated her, and she always hopes that
others viewing her oversized petals will find them as breath-taking as
she did painting them.
Julene has won awards in local, regional and national competitions.
The most important award was a Third Place in the Still Life/Floral
Category of the 2004 Pastel Journal Magazine competition with over
3,000 entries. Another achievement that has meant a lot to her was
winning an honorable mention in the Still Life/Floral category in
The Artist’s Magazine Art Competition in 2003 with over 13,000 entries.
Her work was featured in the August, 2006 edition of the Pastel Journal,
titled "Art in Bloom".
Julene received signature status from the Pastel Society of America,
of New York, New York in 2004, and also is a signature member of the
Ozark Pastel Society, and the Artists of Northwest Arkansas, and a
member of the Degas Pastel Society of New Orleans.
Julene’s artwork is in private and corporate collections.
